Working a 9 to 5 job can be tiresome. Especially if your the kind of person that craves adventure, or wants to take charge of everything. My fellow #girlboss will understand this.
I had an 8 – 6 job and at first I loved it. I loved the people, I loved the work, I was happy. But then unnecessary stress upon unnecessary stress kept piling up until I was in a really dark place. I was depressed, and felt like there was no way out of the hole I fell into. I was no longer happy or fulfilled.
Then one day, I finally had enough, and I decided that I was going to go out on my own. Is it risky? Scary? Daunting? Yes. But is it also exciting? Exiliherating? Freeing? Yes! So it’s worth it. Life is to short to be stuck in a career that stresses you out or that you’re not passionate about.
Are you thinking about going out on your own? Pursuing your dream? In case you are, there are a few things you need to do before taking the plunge.
- Put a strategy in Place: Going out on your own without a plan of any kind is not smart. You need to create a business plan so you know where your headed, what you need to do to get there, and what you need to do to achieve your goals.
- Get your finances in order. Starting a business can be expensive and when you’re starting out you’re not guaranteed to start making enough money to take care of yourself. So before you quit your day job, start setting some money back to hold you over for atleast 6 months without an income.
- Learn to Discipline Yourself: As a business owner, you are you’re own boss, which means that you have to hold yourself accountable to complete your work each day.
- Pull your network together: Having an expansive network is great. You’ll be able to call on people for different things which is ideal for when you’re starting out especially.
- Figure out what your marketable skill is: Before running your own business you need to figure out what your marketable skill is so you can promote that and figure out your business foundation.
- Develop a portfolio: When you run a business you will have clients of some kind. Whether you your baking cupcakes for your bake shop, writing a blog, or teaching social media you will have clients and they will need to see evidence that you know what you’re doing.
- Learn how to manage your time: Starting a business, you are usually the only one running it so you need to learn how to manage your time so you are able to complete everything on your to do list.
- Understand your worth: If you take anything from this list, take this. Knowing your worth is especially important. This is the basis for everything of your business. You need to know your worth so you can price things accordingly.
- Make sure your work space is inspiring: Your work space needs to be inspiring in order to spark creativity and to help you get things done.
- Search for productivity tools: Productivity tools are super helpful. Things like dropbox, Notes, and Google Drive are a few examples of tools that are guaranteed to help you get things done in a timely manner.
Getting these few things in order will help you be well on your way to running your own business. I wish you the best of luck!
